Center Launches New Progressive Math Initiative

The Progressive Math Initiative (PMI) consists of courses designed by professional learning communities (PLCs) of math educators who believe that teacher collaboration can lead to higher levels of student achievement.  Courses posted on this website are developed, reviewed and refined by educators participating in PLC's within their schools, and a virtual PLC linking their schools via this site. Our first course - Algebra - is being developed by middle school math educators participating in the NJCTL math grant project.  Join us in this journey of collaboration and discovery at www.njpmi.org.



Masters Degree in Teacher Leadership
The first cohort of the Masters Degree in Teacher Leadership completed a year of study with a summer field experience at Newark museum. By all accounts, the program is well on its way to setting a new standard for teacher leadership in New Jersey.

Progressive Science Initiative: Teaching Certificate Endorsement in Physics
Improving student achievement in science is now a national priority. To that end, increasing the number of skilled science teachers is also a national priority. The good news is that New Jersey is ready to take on the challenge of science education by training a talented corps of teachers who will lead the next generation to high levels of student achievement in science. The New Jersey Center for Teaching and Learning is launching a new science teacher certification program designed for current certified teachers with great teaching skills and an interest in science education.

Heather Henderson is the mathematics fellow for the New Jersey Center for Teaching and Learning. NJEA and the Center have joined forces to bring high quality web resources to educators. The resources listed in this site meet the criteria for a good “web experience” as determined by NJEA. In addition, the content is reviewed and approved by a representative of the Center’s highly skilled academic team.

School Based Project
The first year of the middle school mathematics grant is completed – and teachers in the three schools are thrilled at the progress they have made. Teachers in Lawrence Township, Egg Harbor City and Deptford Township were each awarded $25,000 by the Center to create collaborative professional learning communities (PLC) of middle school mathematics educators. The goal of the program is for the collaborative professional learning communities to address student achievement gaps in mathematics and to incorporate Algebra I in the middle school curriculum so that all students in the three schools demonstrate proficiency in Algebra I by eighth-grade graduation. The renewable grant will last three years.

Partnership for 21st Century Skills is a better way forward
NJCTL trustees unanimously endorsed participation in the Partnership for 21st century Skills – a national movement designed to promote a state by state dialogue on 21st century skills. The goal of the partnership is to assist states in adopting their own 21st Century initiative. NJCTL joins NJEA and the New Jersey Department of Education in endorsing this program.
